6. Breakthrough

Alistair broke the silence, clasping his hands together, a burst of energy in his voice. “Tell you what! Why don’t we lie down and relax for a bit?”

Laurie nodded. “Yes, let’s do that.”

She glanced down at the towel beneath her and, noticing how it had crumpled, carefully smoothed it, brushing off the sand that had gathered on it. Then she lay on her stomach as before, with her head pointing towards the bungalow and her feet towards the sea.

“May I?” Alistair asked, gesturing towards the space beside her on the towel.

She shifted closer to me, making room for him, and he lay face down next to her. I brushed the sand off my towel and joined them, lying on my stomach on Laurie’s side opposite Alistair. With our chins resting on our hands, the three of us watched in silence the sunlight dance on the sand before us, listening to the soothing sound of the waves behind us.

After a while, my neck began to stiffen, so I rolled onto my side, propping myself up on my elbow, facing Laurie and Alistair—just in time to see Alistair reach over and place his hand on Laurie’s waist. Laurie didn’t say anything, only turned her head to look at him, resting her cheek on her hands. He shifted slightly, catching her gaze, and their eyes met.

He said with warmth, “Do you think talking to you about my sailing trips will help you relax?”

A faint smile briefly crossed Laurie’s lips. “Perhaps. Sailing sounds soothing.”

“It is. I had this one wife...”

“One wife?”

“Yes, someone’s wife. She relaxed best before sex when I talked to her about my yacht.”

“I see. OK. Tell me about your yacht.”

Alistair slipped his hand from Laurie’s waist to her bum and began talking about his yacht, looking her in the eyes. “It’s a mid-size yacht with my own captain and crew. I often invite friends to sail with me. Do you and Geoff enjoy sailing?”

Laurie smiled. “I don’t know, Alistair. We’ve never had the opportunity to sail.”

He gently squeezed her bum cheek. “Maybe I’ll take the two of you with me on my next trip.”

“Where are you going?”

“To the Bahamas.”

“Sounds great,” I jumped in.

“Yeah, we’d love to sail to the Bahamas,” Laurie chimed in. “As long as it’s free.”

“Of course, it’s free.” Alistair chuckled. “In fact, I’d be happy to take you on a bigger trip to my favourite Pacific islands if our collaboration turns into a long-term engagement.”

Laurie raised her eyebrows. “What do you mean by a long-term engagement?”

“We’ll talk about it later,” he said, brushing off the question. “Let’s first handle our current challenge.” He leaned in, his face just inches away from hers. Their eyes met. “A kiss?” he whispered. “It helps people get closer.”

He moved in even closer, but Laurie leaned back and said with a smile, “Tell me more about your yacht.”

He pulled back. At the same time, his hand slipped from her bum to her upper thigh, just at the crease where her bum cheek meets her thigh.
